Shimane's Hidden Gems

HISTORY

Shimane, in western Japan, is steeped in ancient history. It is home to Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's oldest and most important Shinto shrines. The region flourished during the Yayoi period and became a significant cultural center. In the Edo period, Matsue Castle became a prominent feudal stronghold.

CULTURE

Shimane's culture is rich in Shinto traditions, particularly at Izumo Taisha. The region is known for its kagura dance, a traditional performance art. Shimane also boasts exquisite craftsmanship, including Matsue's tea ceremony culture and Iwami Ginzan's silver mining heritage, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
