Nuristan's Hidden Gems

HISTORY

Nuristan, formerly known as Kafiristan, is a remote region in northeastern Afghanistan. It was inhabited by the Nuristani people, who practiced an ancient polytheistic religion. In 1896, the area was forcibly converted to Islam by the Afghan Emir Abdur Rahman Khan, and the name was changed to Nuristan, meaning "Land of Light."

CULTURE

Nuristan's culture is distinct, with roots in pre-Islamic traditions. The Nuristani people are known for their unique language, woodcraft, and dance rituals. Their society is traditionally organized into clans, and they have a rich oral history. Despite conversion to Islam, many ancient customs and practices still influence their way of life.
